Music’s standard method of dealing with its sounding environment is to either shut it out or drown it out. But between the heard and the listened-to, listening is the creative act. And it is through such means that humans can free themselves from the stranglehold of all-powerful facts and their environment. Selective perception is empowerment. Given that most of us today exist all but submerged in the seas of urban soundscape with their manifold layers of sound and noise, Volkmar Klien nudges the window open, extends his space to embrace the inbound and gussies it up in something alluring if not entirely threadbare. (As if sound was a visual affair.)
